IWLA Protecting and Promoting Highway Funds for Freight
On Monday, July 20, IWLA sent a letter, approved by our Board of Directors at the July 9, 2009 meeting, to recommend that Congress set aside Highway Trust Fund income, specifically from the diesel use tax, to repair and promote a nationwide infrastructure for freight. This letter is directed specifically to Representative James Oberstar, Chair, Transportation and Infrastructure Committee; and Representative John Mica, Ranking Member Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
In the letter, Joel Anderson, President & CEO of the IWLA stated that our members support a re-investment of their highway taxes into funds that improve the flow of freight and that we need to let Congress know that when the freight community pays users fees, we have an ethical expectation that those funds will be used to improve the flow of trade and commerce. Anderson stated that IWLA’s position is clear: set aside the diesel tax collections for the movement of freight and that by alleviating the already known and catalogued bottlenecks we will see considerable benefit to our American economy and our American workers.
